Analytics Business

Kuula Business users can add a Google Analytics id to their account and analyze traffic data from each published post & tour. The data is collected on your content appearing on the Kuula page, under your custom domain and in any place you embed the content across the web.

This data can give you a deep insight into where your users come from and how they interact with your content. The collected data is also statistical and anonymous, so it does not invade your visitors privacy, which is a good thing to think about these days!

Setup

The setup is simple. All you need to do is to grab your Google Analytics tracking id and paste it on the Preferences page on Kuula.

Google Analytics setup

If you never used Google Analytics to analyze traffic on a website, you can register for this service, for free, at their website.

To start tracking and analyzing your traffic, you will need to create a new Property in Google Analytics. You can follow this tutorial to see how. Here's a sample setup for a property to track your Kuula content:

Once you have created a property, the tracking id is a string that should look similar to this: UA-000000-2. You can follow instructions in this tutorial under the section Find your Google Analytics ID to find and copy the id from your GA property.

Kuula Preferences setup

Once you have the tracking id, simply paste it on the Preferences page as pictured below, hit save and your traffic will start being analyzed immediately.

Exploring the data

Once you are all setup, head to Google Analytics panel, login and you can start exploring the data.

The collected data includes all visits to any post or tour you published on Kuula both viewed directly or as an embedded player. It also tracks visits on your profile page as well as clicks on hotspots and links in interactive cards.

Post and tour visits

You can check all the post visits in the Behavior > Site Content > All Pages section, it will look similar to this:

The different page names show different type of content that was visited:

  • /post/... - visits to posts & tours on the main Kuula page
  • /share/... - visits to posts in the embedded player or on your custom domain
  • /profile/... - visits to your profile page on Kuula
  • /explore/collection/... - visits on a grid view page of a tour
  • Any other name means this is a visit to a page on your Business website

You can also switch to the Page Title tab on the top, so see the titles instead of URL paths. You can click on the small arrow icon on the right of the page name to open it in a popup window for a preview.

Hotspot and links

Additionally, the system will track every click on any hotspot in your tours as well as link clicks in interactive cards. The click statistics are registered as Events and can be found in the Behavior > Site Content > Events section. The hotspot clicks are filed under the category called hotspot and links - under the category card-link.

On that page, select the hotspot category from the list at the bottom and then select the Event Action, you will see a table similar to this:

The Event Action gives you an idea what kind of click it was, which is related to what kind of action you assign to the hotspot in the editor. By default all clicks are filed under a generic action name. These actions contain the word (generic) in them:

  • nav - a hotspot that takes user to another post
  • card - a hotspot that opens an interactive card
  • link - a hotspot that opens a URL
  • audio - a hotspot that plays an audio file

If you select the Event Label tab, the labels will show the path to the post where the hotspot is located.

Named hotspots

To make tracking and analyzing data easier, you can name each hotspot in the editor. If a hotspot has a name, it will be filed under this name instead of a generic one. For example all the events in the screenshot above like go-downhill, info-card and others without the word (generic) come from named hotspots.

You can assign a name to a hotspot in the editor. If you select a hotspot, the name input field is located all the way at the bottom of the editor panel, as on the image below:

Link clicks

If you add an interactive card with a link to it - this will also be tracked. Those events are called card-link in the category list. You can browse them in the same way as the hotspot ones. The Event Action for a link shows the URL of the link itself, instead of a generic or custom name.

Tracking limitations

Traffic analysis can be blocked for several reasons. Some popular ad blocking extensions can interfere with traffic analytics as well as some browsers can do it on their own.

In our experience, around 10-15% of visits can go untracked for this reason. If you are interested in learning more, here's an in-depth article on this topic.

If you see a discrepancy between the number of visits on Google Analytics and the number of views reported for each post on Kuula, this might be the reason, since our view counter is not impacted by those mechanisms and is therefore more precise.

Realtime tracking

Google Analytics offers a very cool function to see visits as they happen. It's available under the Realtime > Overview menu section.

There aren't a lot of practical applications for this, but it's fun to watch and can be useful to check if the tracking setup works ok. Just open this panel in one browser tab, click on your Kuula content in another and watch it show up! Typically it takes only a few seconds for GA to register a hit.

Learn more?

Google Analytics is a very useful tool and offers an incredible amount of functions to analyze the data. This article merely scratches the surface. A good way to learn what GA can do for you is to explore the interface on your own. Google also provides free online courses at their GA Academy.
